is a well loved and respected Sydney writer and director specialising in both short and full length plays. He has done a great deal of work with the Sydney Fringe and Short+Sweet Sydney. James lives north of the bridge, which he loves, except the regular rhetoric from friends who claim they can’t visit as they need a VISA for the crossing.

_BPS3001_8x12Gabriel McCarthy is a multi-award winning actor and graduate of the Actor’s College of Theatre & Television (2011). In 2007 Gabe started Gabatwa Studios in which he writes, acts in and directs his own theatre and films. Gabriel’s skills excel in improvisation, mime, acrobatic, grotesque, and he has been a gymnast for nearly 20 years. Gabe resides in the sunny part of Marrickville and works as the Artistic Director for Sydney Interactive Theatre in Sydney.

IMG_26245369244707Carli Carey marks hertheatrical writing and directing debut in 24 Hour Theatre Sydney and will be making the move to the big smoke next week. Carli owns two business – a photography business & an entertainment agency. Carli is also studying a Bachelor of Communication at GriffithUniversity and majoring in writing for stage & screen.

Read their thoughts on 24 Hour Theatre…

Why do you want to be involved in the 24 Hour Theatre Project?

Gabe: I wanted to get involved with the 24 Hour Theatre Project because I always try to get involved in theatre industry events, especially for independent companies like Black Box. I know Luke Berman, who runs it, and many people involved as writers, actors and directors. They are all talented individuals, and I know we can all band together to form great things. 24 Hour Theatre allows that process to prosper!

James: It’s my first time and it sounds interesting. I’m working with an excellent writer Con Nats, so it will be very good and fun.

Carli: For me, I want to be involved in the 24 Hour Theatre Project because it is an opportunity to work on my craft in a challenging, fast paced environment! The concept that Luke Berman has brought to the table is both ambitious & exhilarating! As a writer & director I relish the chance to support local theatre, and more than that, to develop new & fresh works for stage. I am looking forward to working with an amazing team of incredibly talented actors & actresses who are passionate about what they do & can’t wait to ‘see what we’re all made of!

Are you nervous? Excited?

Gabe: I am very excited! I’ve been doing this a while now, so I’m not nervous – I’m just anxious to start!

James: I’m excited, especially given that we don’t know what really going to happen until 5pm on Day 1.

Carli: There is always an element of nervousness when taking a risk and putting something creative out there for people to enjoy / evaluate / critique. I’d like to think I have a lot of nervous excitement which seems to assist my creative process. Being nervous means I care about what I’m doing & that I’m giving the project my absolute best effort & energy. I am certainly excited to see what I write come to life in stage in Sunday night.

Tell us something funny or quirky about you.

Gabe: I’m quite a decent beat boxer.

James: I’m now the guy who tells dad jokes. Come to think of it, I always have.

Carli: Hmm… Something funny or quirky about me? I’m not sure. I just texted someone to ask their opinion and their response was, “most things”. I guess my response would be to come & chat with me and make your own mind up!

What can the audience expect to see when they see 24 Hour Theatre?

Gabe: When the audience cast their wonderful eyes upon 24 Hour Theatre, they’ll be seeing never before seen work, full of fresh material for them to really absorb and enjoy. Plus, I’m known for never taking anything too seriously – so I’m sure they’ll be a few chuckles out there!

James: Our aim is to put on an excellent and engaging show.

Carli: I hope the audience expects to see some inspired performances at 24 Hour Theatre, as I know there will be! The culmination of 24 adrenalin-filled hours will be seen on the Tap Gallery stage on Sunday night, and I think the audience may be surprised at what can be accomplished in a day when people are passionate about what they do.

Seeking Actors and Directors
– Submissions for Writers CLOSED

HOW DOES IT WORK?
24 HOUR THEATRE is a fast and furious project, where teams of actors, writers and directors will create and produce completely original short plays all in 24 hours. In the afternoon of Saturday 12th April 2014  actors will be grouped into their acting ensembles and assigned a writer (or writing team) and a director. Each writer will draw a topic or ‘red-herring’  out of a hat, of which they will need to include in the play that they will write THAT NIGHT. There will also be a communal topic drawn that all plays must incorporate into the plays. Writers will have an opportunity to brainstorm their ideas with their director and actors on the evening.

At 9:00am the next morning, the writer will hand the original script to their director and actors who will learn their lines, stage their play and perform it that night. This is an exciting challenge and stacks of fun!

WHO CAN APPLY? HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?
Expressions of interest can be emailed to Producer Luke Berman (Black Box Theatre) at luke@blackboxtheatre.org – please include whether you would like to act, write or direct, and tell us a little about yourself and your theatre experience, feel free to include your CV and headshot if you have one. This project is open to everyone!

You can apply to participate as an individual, or you can put together your own group of actors/writers/directors. Applications from Independent Theatre Companies are welcome.

Meet the Players: Kelly-Maree (SPAT), Adam Armitt (Wollongong Comedy) and Madeleine Diggins (The Drama Studio)

MEET THE CAST

meetcast 3 Kelly Adam Maddie Evan Jen

Three Actors from Playmates Illawarra discuss the upcoming evening of improvisation madness. Kelly-Maree Michael (Team Captain, Stanwell Park Arts Theatre),  Adam Armitt  (Wollongong Comedy) and Madeleine Diggins (The Drama Studio)

Why did you chose to perform in Playmates Illawarra?

Kelly-Maree: Despite this being my first year, meaning I am likely going to be hopelessly outmatched, I’ve always been envious and admiring of the SPAT teams that get to participate in this event. I’ve always loved improv, and when the usual SPAT players were unable to be involved this year, I stupidly volunteered myself as the sacrificial lamb (aka “Team Captain”). I assume it will be equal parts exhilarating and humiliating, but after all, what is theatre but the willingness to be humiliated for the sake of art?

Adam: After hearing about playmates I was incredibly interested, having participating in my high schools improve team i have always loved improvised theatre

Madeleine: They needed a token girl for the all male drama studio team.

What games are you most hoping to play on the night?

Kelly-Maree: Murder Endowments. I feel this will be very cathartic, knowing my team mates (I’m a very morbid human being). I’m also looking forward to the singing games, as we’ve got a couple of amazing singers on the team. Also, In a…With a…While a.. and Play in the Style of..as I think these are the two most likely to take a bizarre turn.

Adam: Slow mo commentary or foreign language film, as i love they capture the best of both clever dialogue and slap stick

Madeleine: Slow motion commentary is my favourite! Also song, just so my fellow team member, Evan can dominate while i stand in the back and hum

What games do you hope you DON‘T get on the night?

Kelly-Maree: Opera, because I’m hoping that up until this game people will be impressed with my singing ability.

Adam: Song or opera i don’t think anyone on my team can sing.

Madeleine: The four minute games terrify me!

Are you nervous?

Kelly-Maree: Not yet, which is worrying.

Adam: I am always nervous before i perform, its all about overcoming those nerves and using it to enhance your performance.

Madeleine: Hell yes!

Do you think your team can win the Trophy?

Kelly-Maree: If beginners luck is a thing..maybe. We’re in it for the fun.

Adam: I know we can

Madeleine: I think we have a good chance!

Why should people come and watch the show?

Kelly-Maree: Because public spectacle always draws a crowd. The gladiatorial contests never went away, we still enjoy a bit of public humiliation, it’s just a bit gentler in modern society. I promise it’s better than Big Brother.
Also, a night out is always fun, plus the money is going to a good cause.

Adam: This is an incredibly fun night where the audience can get involved and our team has some of the best comedians Wollongong has to offer.

Madeleine: What else are they going to be doing on Saturday night? This is a once in a lifetime (or yearly) event to watch hilarious live theatre…at an affordable price!

Playmates 2013 Preview

logo_traspPLAYMATES 2013
PREVIEW

This year’s Playmates Illawarra is heating up, with six well balanced and talented teams of actors from six theatre and entertainment groups in the Illawarra sharing the stage together for one night only in the name of fun and friendship. This Saturday night will see teams from Roo Theatre, Stanwell Park Arts Theatre (SPAT), University of Wollongong Faculty of Creative Arts, Wollongong Comedy, and 2012 Grand Finalists The Drama Studio return for another shot of the trophy won last year by Roo Theatre. Playmates welcomes Moonburn Productions to their first Playmates hit-out, and they are looking to steal the trophy from their seasoned Playmates rivals in their inaugural hit-out.

The teams will face four rounds of improvisation challenges with the audience dictating what the actors will perform for them. Each scene will be scored by our panel of judges, and the two teams with the highest scores will go head to head in the Grand Final round, the winner taking home the Golden Gong trophy which has lived in Shellharbour for the last two years.

This year’s audience can expect to see our actors creating original operas, improvise wacky scenes stolen from SBS world movies, play out scenes in mime or gibberish, slow motion commentaries (eg world championship nappy changing), original poems and scenes where the actors must change their emotions up to twenty times! (and many more!)

The energetic and gifted Jim Fishwick returns to host the evening and is joined by Sarah Knight who will be this year’s timekeeper and co-host.
Read more about this year’s hosts

The well loved and respected local actor, director and advocate for community theatre in the Illawarra Olav Lehmann returns again as Judge for the seventh year. This year he will be joined by award winning playwright Maree Teychenne and one of the Illawarra’s most loved and energetic local performers Trent Bowater who is best known for his Robbee Williams showcase.

Roo Theatre are again fielding another all-boys team and are hungry to equal the Playmates record of three years consecutive Playmates victories set by Arcadians 2007-2009. Led by captain Daniel Stevanovski with the energetic and committed David Rienits, the talented and charming Adam O’Brien and James Poole who is ready to impress in his first Playmates.

From the north of the Illawarra, a new generation of actors make the trip to the gong to enter possibly their greatest theatre challenge ever. The warriors from Stanwell Park Arts Theatre are hungry to take home their first Playmates trophy. This team of fresh faces is captained by Kelly-Maree Michael with Adam Wade, Sophie Mathieson and Reece Mathieson.

Fired up and ready for victory is the young and energetic team of academic thespians representing University of Wollongong’s Faculty of Creative Arts. Team captain Rebecca Hurd is expecting nothing less than high distinction performance by her team which stars Billie Scott, Lisa Omodei and Kate Cameron.

Wollongong’s longest running troupe of stand up comedians return after their brave theatrical debut last year with a strong and balanced team starring team captain, professional comedian and the main man of Wollongong Comedy – Stu Macpherson. Young upcoming comedian Adam Armitt returns after impressing last year’s audience, and is joined by explosive seasoned actors and comedians Will Thomas and Craig ‘Gnarly’ Gregory. This team may pose the greatest threat of stealing Roo’s crown.

Team captain, freelance composer, conductor, and university lecturer Dr Houston Dunleavy teams up with daughter Margaret Dunleavy in Moonburn Productions. These musical masters will be looking to titillate the ears and hearts of the Playmates audience, and will be a strong chance of making this year’s Grand Final round. Sydney actress Jen Jackson, who recently moved into the Illawarra gets to tread the Wollongong boards for the first time, while the composed and witty Matt Sandford rounds out what is an exciting team.

Last but certainly not least are last year’s Grand Finalists who on their Playmates debut fell just short of taking home the trophy. The team of local emerging talent coming out of one the regions leading independent drama schools The Drama Studio will be looking to go one step further in 2013. Captained by the amazing Even Kerr, who was a standout in 2012 will be joined by promising young actor Martin Field, the bold and hilarious Madeleine Diggins and youngster Matt Latham.

Tickets for this year’s comedy spectacular are selling quickly, so book now to make sure you don’t miss out on the hottest seats in town. Show starts at 8pm Saturday 9th November and will be lighting up the Owen Theatre at City Diggers Club, Burelli street Wollongong.

Jim Fishwick and Sarah Knight (Timekeeper)

JIM FISHWICK

Jim Fishwick is an award-winning performer and director and professional Improvisation champion. As part of the Winning Musical Theatre Act of the Sydney Fringe Festival 2012, entertainer Jim Fishwick has already captivated audiences with his unusual and strange mix of entertainment along with his passion for the dinky ukulele (Jim is the current president of Sydney University’s Ukulele Society.)

Taking inspiration from some of the more quirky comedians such as Eddie Izzard, Paul Merton and Bill Bailey, Jim Fishwick entered the comedy scene at a relatively young age.

“I started doing comedy when I was 17 and I sucked for about three years,” said Fishwick with a big dose of honesty. Since that time, Fishwick has refined his chosen art form, achieving greater recognition for his role as a producer and the host of Alexander Vanderboom’s Acts of Derring-Do.

Jim has long since thrived on the experience of being in the centre of the spotlight.

“At a very conceptual level, I enjoy the idea of communicating with people and making them think. Then on another level I enjoy the entertainment idea of it, like people can take an hour out of their life and go and just be made to laugh for an hour.”
